Have things handy
Even though it may be annoying at times: changing nappies is necessary. Usually, for the first three years, the nappies will be changed a couple of times a day. So that the baby and the person doing the changing feel comfortable, you should select a nice place. Of course, you can do it on a suitable pad on the floor, the sofa or the parents’ bed. This is usual in many countries where the idea of a changing table is uncommon or even unknown. But such a table is more comfortable and back-friendly for the person doing the work.
A special movable table can be used, in smaller rooms you can mount a foldable baby changing board on the wall. Or use a changing table. The advantage here is that the changing component can be removed and the table used for different purposes.
The necessary accessories
Whatever you decide on: it is ideal that the changing area is comfortable and at stomach height to prevent unnecessary bending. You should have all the necessary items handy. You don’t want to leave the child unattended at any moment and always keep it within reach. The items include the nappies, cleaning materials, such as a water bowl and cloth, childcare products and a change of clothing.
If the changing table does not offer enough space, you can mount a shelf on the wall above it. It should be unreachable for the child but wide enough to accommodate all the necessary things. Make sure the space is warm during winter. Use a suitable heating source. The best is to ask your midwife. The changing underlay, especially on the floor or bed, should prevent any moisture from getting through. If you use folded towels, make sure they are thick enough. Changing pads that are made of plastic may contain undesirable substances like phthalates. Generally, it is advisable to lay a cloth over the plastic material. Then it does not matter if some fluid goes amiss while the nappy is being changed.
